The Primary School Attached to Xi’an
Jiaotong University (PSAXJTU) is a modern school
with a deep-rooted culture. Its predecessor was
the Primary School Attached to Nanyang Public
School which was founded in 1897 in Shanghai. In
1956, PSAXJTU was moved from Shanghai to Xi’an
together with Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU)
and changed its name to its current one. The
school has reached its present size after
several expansions. It covers an area of 9334
square meters. (30623 square feet)
The school provides various stages for its students to show
their talents, such as the book bar, the reading
experience column and display window for
self-created works, and many others, making it a
centerpiece for culture exchange. The rich
campus network resources such as the ‘Digital
Library’, the ‘Young Pioneers Club’, the ‘Blogs’,
the ‘Class Forum’, and the ‘Class-Family Forum’
build a platform for school, teachers, students
and their parents to communicate and make
progress together.
Student-centered approaches are adopted in class
instructions, which can be exemplified by the
multifaceted evaluation mechanism for students’
work. Students are evaluated in terms of
background, form, learning phase, styles and
efficiency so that they will be able to have a
clear, objective understanding of themselves,
thus leading to a well-rounded, healthy
developmental improvement for students. The
school attaches great importance to curricular
development for various subjects, especially in
the teaching of English. PSAXJTU was one of the
earliest primary schools in Shaanxi Province to
offer English classes starting from first grade.
A great many foreign teachers have been invited
to our school to guide our students in English.
Under the guidance of affective education
theory, they explored the daily primary school
educational mode which is full of interests
feature based on stimulating children's
interests.
A diversified group of extra-curricular activities and
competitions such as ‘Classical Poems Reading’,
‘Speech’, ‘Essay’, ‘Painting’, ‘Chinese
Calligraphy’, and ‘Web-page Design’ have been
launched in order to activate the students’
interest in hands-on work and to motivate their
creativity. More social clubs such as the
swimming team, aero-modeling group, game of go
team, school orchestra and choir, dance team,
Judo team, Student Poetry Society and other
community activities are open to students to
expand their knowledge and to develop their
individual identity thus improving their
comprehensive skills set. In doing such a wide
variety of student activities, the teachers and
students both can strive to reach their full
potential.
